OLIVER, BC — March 31, 2010 — Oliver launches a new tourism website, www.winecapitalofcanada.com, that further positions Oliver, BC – Wine Capital of Canada as a visitor destination.
Unveiling the new tourism brand, the site features the many amenities that Oliver has to offer the Okanagan traveler, including more than 20 of British Columbia’s licensed, internationally recognized wineries and some of the best mountain biking trails in the Okanagan Valley. “Oliver Tourism Association is very excited about the launch of Oliver’s new website. We are impressed with the professional quality and the scope of coverage,” says Chair, Kathy Mercier.
“We are thrilled to be a part of this new tourism initiative and are excited to increase tourism in our area,” says Mayor, Patrick Hampson.  “We have a strong community that is proud of where we live and are happy to showcase the best that we have to offer.”
The purpose of the website is to build Oliver as a tourist destination and to bring awareness to the multitude of things to do in Oliver.  Visitors can search for year-round events, quaint B&Bs, wine tours and more!  The site provides tourists with maps, directions from various destinations and a complete business directory of all registered businesses.
A Tourism Advisory Committee (TAC), comprising of local business owners and residents was integral to the development of the tourism marketing initiatives, including the new tourism brand, Wine Capital of Canada, the graphic standards and the website. The TAC ensured that the new branding was focused in the right direction – a direction that the residents of Oliver can stand behind and feel proud of.
“We are very pleased with our new tourism branding and are looking forward to an upcoming busy tourist season,” comments Director, Allan Patton.
To ensure equal access to the website, accessibility issues were also taken into consideration during the development phase. Features such as increase font size, skip to content and use of descriptive alternate text, support easier browsing of the site by those with disabilities. "The site incorporates features that allow me, using speech output on my computer, to navigate easily and efficiently through the website. It also has spoken descriptions of the graphics and pictures which give me an idea what everyone else is seeing on the screen," says Linda Bertram, Measuring Up Coordinator.
